First day went well - I basically can't say anything about it, but it was good fun, and interesting.

This evening, Hazel and I went to see the new Harry Potter, which was pretty good fun. I think having gotten used to the series, I know what to expect now, and I'm able to enjoy them on their own merit, instead of the assurances of fans that it's "great", "incredible", "not like any other fantasy" or "just as much for adults as for kids". So, as a film for big kids/young adults, it was great fun.

I dispute any claim that it's "not like any other fantasy" on the grounds that it has clear influences from many other fantasy stories, but I shall not rant about such things here.

The films are reasonably enjoyable, though, I admit.

I remember reading an interview with JK Rowling in which she said that HP couldn't be influenced by other fantasy, because she never read fantasy, which I was pretty skeptical about.

A couple of years later, I heard her on the radio talking about how much she liked Lord of the Rings and CS Lewis as a kid :(
